Filip has surgery

Filip was born with a birthmark on his left leg. Nothing dangerous, but it was rather large and with time it carries a slightly increased risk for developing a melanoma. So we decided to have it removed. To avoid the rather trying treatment with inflatable skin expanders the surgery is done in serial steps, removing just the right amount at each surgery, allowing normal “stretching” of the remaining skin. Filip’s had two surgeries so far, and now it was time for the third (and hopefully last) time.

During the previous two operations Flip hasn’t really been aware of what was going on. This time we had talked alot about the operation and the anaesthesia. He was very good and calm at the surface with a little nervousness underneath. On our way to the operating room he whispered “Daddy, I’m folding my hands now”. One of the times he actually practiced what we’ve discussed about having “a prayer in your heart”…

Going in to surgery

Filip liked the anaesthetic nurse – she was really good at putting the plastic tube in the blood vein, without Filip feeling anything! This is the last picture before the anaesthetics and Filip falling asleep:

The surgery went swift and within a couple of hours Filip was back at the post-op ward, still sleeping for another hour or so:

While Filip was sleeping, Matilda took the chance to close her eyes for a few minutes. Registration took the better part of yesterday, and todays schedule required an early start at 5:30:

Soon Filip woke up. A little dizzy at first, but he quickly regained his strength:

The nurses were really nice and treated Filip like a prince. They offered him small toys, lemonade, fruit-yogurt, pancakes and even icecream!

As we drove home later that afternoon Filip concluded that having surgery (for his birthmark) wasn’t that bad – it was actually quit fun – thanks to all the good doctors and nurses minimizing the “trauma”!

Goodbye Goddard family!

During the past years we’ve been fortunate to get to know the Goddard family that moved to our congregation at church. They really are a wonderful family, always happy, eager to help and with the best kids you’ll ever meet. But time has come for them to move back to the states. It was a sad farewell, but we wish them the best and plan to keep in touch.

Being their last sunday (at least for a while) in Västra Frölunda, we got some folks to gather around them for a goodbye-picture:

Bergamo – final course

I’ve had two previous courses in cardiac surgery this year in Bergamo (Italy). Now it was time for the final “level C” course.

Honestly, compared with the previous two courses, this one was the weekest. But I was fortunate to go with my resident collegues Andreas, Lisa and Oscar, and we had a great time sitting through long hours of lectures, eating nice Italian food, discussing the deep and the not so deep questions of life, and spending a rainy day in Milano.

Happy students

In Milano we visited il Doumo – a truly impressive cathedral standing in the central part of town. We also found a small but wonderful restaurant, “Porca Vacca“, wich served some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. Give it a try if you’re in the area!

But a week away from the family is a long time and it was nice to finally come home again. Filip had lost his first tooth, and Clara was eager to dance in the dress that daddy couldn’t resist bringing home from Italy…

Youthful mind

OK, I admit – I’ve had yet another birthday.

I’m starting to get “middle-age-paranoia” and don’t really care for counting the years anymore. But I do enjoy liquorice cakes and family and friends stopping by for a social visit.

If you really insist on knowing my current age, you simply have to count the candles…

Congratulations Michael & Dorotea

Our dear friends Michael and Dorotea were married this week. Congratulations, we’re so happy for you! They make a very handsome couple indeed:

P.S. As some of you might have noticed I’ve updated the images. I made the mistake of using a color profile optimized for print (ProPhoto RGB), not web display (sRGB IEC61966-2.1). This resulted in really bad colors in many browsers.
