Matilda gave med an assignment: we need a recent family picture to send with an application for school for the kids. As most of you know, we try to take pictures as often as we can, but when browsing my archive I couldn’t find any recent picture with the whole family gathered together.
How do you capture a good family portrait using a self-timer? With small kids, this has proved to be quite a challenge, and an art that I’ve far from mastered.
Lessons learned so far:
- If at all possible, set everything up alone and take a few test pictures to confirm that all settings are OK.
- Photograph outside, in nice weather and good light. Since its dark many hours before I’m home from work, inside was our only option. I found that our kids tire quickly in the familiar setting of the livingroom…
- Do what you can within 2 minutes. We went on for 15 minutes, but when examining the result, the only two usable frames were the first ones we took.
- Bribe. Candy works well in our family. Gustav got a bottle of gruel.
Here is one of the two usable pictures:
So, how do you improve your results? All insights and tips are very welcome!
